Why are you here? I don’t mean here reading this blog post. I mean why are you here in this life?
Have you thought about it? Of course you have. Most of us think about our purpose and mission but if you’re like me, it’s not an easy answer. The answer is constantly evolving and changing as we evolve and change.
I decided back at the beginning of this year to do a monthly Women Rising Virtual call. Just so you know, the calls are open to all women, they’re free, and the opening meditation where we gather our energy is shared in audio format with subscribers.
Since I just started the calls Jan of this year, it didn’t surprise me that on two of the calls I was the only one who showed up.
I did the call anyway.
As time has gone on, I’ve thought a lot about the content I want to present on the calls. You see, they’re not how-to calls. They don’t offer information on marketing or branding or building a list or technology or how to write better blog posts that people will read. All very worthy topics but not what I’ve set out to do.
Instead I want the calls to fill a need for women ready to talk about topics like the cornerstones of abundance, meditation, finding your voice, why self care is essential, and how to have presence. As time goes on they’ll include discussion and celebrations and idea sharing.
Some may feel those are soft topics, but I think those topics come first. They’re a foundation for everything else. So many women struggle to have the basic needs of life and they’re exhausted by their situation. The calls are an oasis, a place to rest from the struggle.
This post might not answer the question why are you here, but perhaps it will give you some insight into your own life, and why I believe ‘who are you and why are you here‘ come before any strategies and tasks on your to do list.
As I share parts of the May Women Rising call here in audio format, they’ll illustrate some of my reasons for doing the calls, and why I will continue every month even if no one shows up.
1. To SEE the Patriarchy is the First Important Step to Freedom
For women in particular, we are influenced by the patriarchy without being aware of how much.
Have you ever looked at another woman as competition? Have you ever felt envious of another woman being successful? If someone else has abundance, does it mean that somehow there isn’t enough for you?
I’ve seen these attitudes and beliefs in other women and in myself. I know I still fall easily into the trap laid by the patriarchy.
This article about Patriarchy Chicken is a great example of how we try to take up less space than men. Or accommodate, make room for, apologize to; the list goes on.
Never Miss the Weekly Post
As women gather together to rise above the traps that keep us locked into an old paradigm, we will free so much more than ourselves.
2. Use These Four Points in the Body to Create Presence
I want all women to have a voice, to have presence, to be able to be seen and heard without being criticized or even endangered for speaking up.
Presence does not come from the mind. It comes from the body, from being fully in the body.
In the second part of the May call, I define the four places in the body that, from my experience as a singer, voice coach and speaker, create energy coherence. The presence that others can sense and feel is the by product.
3. What Do Women Do With Our Anger?
I want women to have a way to use their anger about current struggles and injustices in a positive way, a way that doesn’t harm or endanger themselves or others.
Anger is an energy we don’t want to stay stuck in. How do we move through it?
The next time you’re angry, try this practice.
4. A Meditation Practice You Can Do Right Now
I meditate every day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I know first hand the power of meditation for calming my monkey mind, and being able to see situations more clearly. It’s made a real difference in my life since I committed to a daily practice.
A meditation practice doesn’t have to take a long time to reap the benefits. It has a funny way of creating the feeling I have more time in the day, so it’s especially good for busy women.
This audio is only five minutes long. Can you take the time to stop and listen right now?
Once I knew that part of why I’m here is to make loving trouble for the patriarchy, I felt called to create opportunities for women to gather in circle.
There is no hierarchical, top down power structure in a circle. Instead there’s an opportunity for each individual woman to step out as a leader and be supported in her challenges, dreams and desires.
In circle, it’s possible to believe we can help make the world a better place through making each individual stronger and by being part of collective co-creation and collaboration.
